question concerning reverse lock 1978 20 hp 200

Ok, I have a 1978 Mercury 20hp, model 200, should there be a rod, cable or something that would raise or disengage the reverse lock when the engine is in forward mode?
Thanks,
Frank

Re: question concerning reverse lock

Hiding low and behind the lower rubber tower cushion is a plastic shifter rod connector. It moves a wire up and down as you shift, and the wire pulls down on the hook (if all is well). A dog to work on, and the splines in that plastic piece strip easily.

Re: question concerning reverse lock

Thanks Jeff,
I suspected that was the case, however my lock is broken due to the face that the wire from the shifter was broken and/or disconnected, so now I need to replace the lock and the wire, if it's avalible. Do you know if the pin that holds the reverse lock is hard to remove and what the procedure is for removing it?
Many thanks,
Frank aka CH357
