" As a small plant mechanic , when the motor wouldnt start i checked the spark , 7/16 gap O.k.
Overhauled the carby nothing wrong in there.
Put in brand new fuel still nothing.
Pulled off the flywheel everything looks fine(incl. key)
Comp. feels fine
The motor was running fine , however a small squeak had developed. When we stopped to investigate it took 15 minutes to get it started.
We drove at 1/3 throttle for 15 minutes and it ran fine. Then we stopped for a fish and it hasn't started since.
any help appreciated as it has 3 mechanics stumped

"Jobbo.... Check the compression with a gauge. It should be in the 100+ psi area and even on both cylinders, then double check the spark to make sure it jumps that 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame on both cylinders constantly.

If the above checks out okay, and you're sure the flywheel key isn't sheared, that would leave only the fuel system suspect. Remove the front bottom screw/bolt from the float chamber to check for water that might have been in the previous fuel.

If the cylinder head has been off recently for any reason (or even if it hasn't), it's possible that it wasn't torqued properly and a head gasket failed. This would allow water to enter the cylinders... that should show up on a compression check. Let us know what you find.

" Thanks Joe for your prompt reply but you`ll never guess what it was. When I checked the spark plugs i removed the spark blug held it upside down (electrode up) for a visul inspection then put it in the lead for a spark test , again upside down ....great spark.
However when i went to reinstall it i caught something very slight in the corner of my eye.
Upon closer inspection the plug still looked fine upside down but when i inverted it (electrode down)The centre porcelin slid down the centre electode blocking the gap!!
Wouldnt beleive it if i didnt see it
Fitted new plugs and away she went
I would`ve thought it would fire on 1 cylinder but there you go I should know to go back to basics every time.
