Does the prop of your outboard motor need to be below the bottom of the boat? I have two motors that I am working on, (so I can understand motors/boating better). One is a short shaft and the other is long shaft. Which would be the better of the two? so I know which one to put more time into.
My boat is a 1968 Boniito tri-hull, the motors are: Long shaft- 1968 evinrude 40hp w/selectric shift, and the short shaft- 1965 evinrude 40hp super seahorse.
thanks for the help.

The plate just above the propeller is called the cavitation plate. This plate should be approximately 1/2" to 3/4" below the bottom of the boat at the transom, not over 1" below the bottom. The 1965 40hp can be extended to long shaft easily with a long driveshaft, the 5" extension housing, and longer water tubes.
