"I'm trying to resurrect a QD-11, put new style coils on the old armatures and need to be sure I'm wiring correctly. I assume each coil wire connects to the bar where the capacitor ties in and the other coil wire goes to the armature plate, correct? If memory serves, one coil was wired this way but the second coil had both wires to the capacitor tie point, just didn't seem right...

Does anyone have a schematic, the manual is pretty vague."

"One wire is usually longer than the other. The long one connects to the points, same screw connector that the condenser is attached to.

The shorter wire (ground wire) connects to one of the screws that secures the coil. Normally looking straight down at the coil screws with the coil facing you, it would be the screw to your right, closest to the crankshaft. Be sure to place the wire so that it does not rub the crankshaft etc.

Note that the coils must be place exactly right, as follows:

(Magneto Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.
