putting new impeller in my stringer outdrive 1977 351

I have a 1977 351W and a stringer outdrive. How hard is it to change the impeller and what is the procedure? thanks for any help Chuck

have a table or a large cooler or chair ready on the port side.

on a trailer lower the bow as far as it will go, and raise the drive 1/2 the way up.

Remove the very top bolts, and the exhaust and the lower will come down. place it on the table and tie it to the swim platform. be carefull of the cable don't pull on it plenty of play in the cable.

remove the 4 bolts facing u in the upper drive from the bottom and the whole waterpump and shaft will come out. you could raise the drive a little more to make it easy, i sit on a milk crate when i pull the pum

No need to remove the entire drive from the boat. Above is a copy and paste from 2 other posts i replied to. If all you want to do is replace the water pump impeller or check the shafts, then this is what i recommend.

ok ,got it thanks again chief for you help! I got a CD manual and its ok but sometimes it best to ask the people that has did it! Chuck

I'd just spend the extra 10 minutes to take the drive off rather than work upside down, but whatever works best for you guys. DIYing is about finding your own way of doing things. No cable on a 77
if you do remove the drive, mark the ball gears with some white-out or paint... supposedly makes them last longer if they are indexed the same way at install

Thanks Hystat,I might as well take the drive out and check it out anyway and clean it up since I am going to replace the transom seal anyway,because it has been sitting for years.Plus I can paint it and make it look new again.I own a outboard,but this is the first time owning a inboard.I was a auto mechnic for many years,but this is all greek to me,but learning all about the boat and how it works hopefully will help me in the future.I really just love this site and all the help you"all give!!!!!!!! Chuck

Quick question relating to this post. How much play should there be (up/down) in the exhaust housing with relation to the gear housing when you put it back on. I never noticed it before but I have about a 1/8" to 1/4" play, meaning I can grab hold of the lower unit and move it up and down on the gear housing. Any thoughts or is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard ! Usually i say start your own thread.

You meant the half moon gear and the gear that moves the half moon gear.

A little play. What you mention is about right.

Thanks much. Not sure what you mean by the half moon gear but I am sure you are right. My terminology knowledge is nothing more than looking at A LOT OF diagrams.
