Putting In gear kills I/O engine???

I have a 1985 Century Bronco with a 140 hp original motor in it, I/O. Put it in the water this season and could not get the propeller to engage without killing the engine. It ran great in IDLE, and in THROTTLE ONLY all the way up to max RPM, but as soon as I went to engage the drive for the propeller the engine would immediate drop from idle to 0 RPM. No crunching noises or grinding, but just shut off. I tried revving it up and clicking back through idle to engage it and had the same result. It didn't matter if I pushed it halfway up or all the way, still the same story. Is there a kill switch that could be malfunctioning? The propeller spins freely by hand so I don't thing anything is seized. Any advise or suggestions of what to look at would be great.

Thanks!

could be the shift interupter doing its job from a frozen/damaged shift cable or a drive problem.
with the engine off can you shift into gear and out of gear easily?

With the engine off the throttle moves easily for the first 1/4 of movement. After that it will go the rest of the way, but very stiff and more difficult to push than normal. Are there any other ways I would be able to tell that there is a problem with the shift cable?

I have the original Operation & Maintenence Manual, but not the full service manual (if that is what you are referring to). I'm not sure the last time it was removed for service. The engine is the 140MR. So, you suggest taking the drive off next? Do you think it is worth the time to troubleshoot it myself, or do you suggest taking it to the local boat repair shop? Thanks for the help.

once removed the arm must operate freely ,1 finger freely.the slider is connected to the shift cable. If you removed the lower cable from inside the boat all you should need is 2 fingers to move the black plastic sleeve. Should you find these free, go to the drive and check the shift shaft for free movement.move the brass shoe back and forth
