Purchase the correct exhaust manifold

"Hi, I have a 1986 merc i/o 19

"Hi, I have a 1986 merc i/o 190hp 4cyl.4brl.I need an exhaust manifold and reservoir. I don't know if mine is cast iron or aluminum. Looking at parts I see two that fit the engine,and don't know which one to get.,,The kit with both manifold and reservoir is alot cheaper than the other model sold seperately.

MCM 816219A4
Fits MCM470/485/488(1980 to 1984) and 3.7LTR Engines (1985 to 1989)Includes aluminum manifold and reservoir package must be bought when replacing older style cast iron manifolds.

816219A5
Order this manifold if you have to replace an aluminum manifold.
This Kit includes gaskets. It does NOT include an elbow.
If you also need the elbow, order Part 98562A6

My question is can the 816219A4 kit be used if the manifold I am replacing is already an aluminum one??????
A local mechanic told me the only differance is the elbow,but I need to know before spending so much.
If it helps at all,,my manifold's reservoir bolts THRU the reservoir not beside it.
I don't think this is my engine's serial number,,but there is a very small plate on the starboard aft of the engine that says A496055.

"Is an "exhaust riser" the same thing as my layman's term "reservoir"?
Back to the bottom line question,can I use the 816219A4 kit if I am replacing both the manifold and the reservoir? I don't understand what would be differant between the two if both new pieces are aluminum.

"A cast iron manifold was used at one time, thats the difference in riser/res.
your "Reservior" is part of the exaust riser.The very early 470`s had a sep one on the foward part of the manifold. Catalog shows a OSCO elbow $257 list.
That kit number should work ok."

I have another question if you could. I have already had the engine winterized. I have found a good price for the new manifold,but want to cover as many bases as I can. I would like to remove the manifold to inspect the block side of the rear-most port to be sure it will take a new gasket. If I drain the manifold and reservoir and remove it,,can I just leave it off over the winter? Would that endanger the block?

"It was fogged when winterized. Are you saying spray additional fogger in the ports?
So, am I correct thinking if I do remove the manifold there won't be antifreeze in the engine but the block still won't freeze?
