pull starter recoil

1958 7,5 hp. AD-12. Johnson
replaced the starter rope on this engine, It hangs out about one foot after installing. Tried to align with the JE mark on he recoil,
But, hangs out. How can I correct?

Did the old rope break? If so, did you inspect the spring? A broken rope nearly always destroys the spring from resulting backlash. If spring is not backlashed, put another turn of pre-load on the spring.

Thank you, will try. New spring was put in two years ago.
