Pull start coil jammed

I have 1976 6hp Evinrude. The prop turns. It starts and runs fine if you wrap rope around flywheel and pull. Flywheel turns freely by hand. When pulling cord to start the starter gear rises to engage flywheel, but won’t pull any further, as if it’s jammed. Is this fixable or just buy a new starter?
Frustrated. Thanks.

As Racer said…how far are you opening thr throttle. I have a ‘76 & a ‘77, they have some little plastic bits that move when you advance the throttle. This is to prevent you starting it at full throttle.
Remove the cowl. Turn the throttle & watch how those bits, (just below the starter pinion gear move),
You will see a small lever will ride along a part just below the flywheel. If you move throttle past a certain point, the lever drops over a “cutout”…that locks the starter.
If this is not clear, I’ll take a photo tomorrow, that motor is at my other place.
PS you don’t want to buy another starter…check the prices

The responses about the throttle make sense. When I last started it with the pole cord, I had the throttle set too high and the engine really revved up. I have since moved it back to start. I assume you’re talking about the handle and not the mixture knob.

Did you ensure, by visual inspection…that little plastic cam is retracting when you twist the throttle towards idle?
I’ll be up at the lake house tomorrow & take a photo.
The other reason is buggered up starting spindles. You can take the entire starter apart…maybe the spring is broken, or, someone wound it up the wrong direction. Hopefully not, those springs are $$$

I tried to retract anything I could get my eyes on, but can’t figure it out. Had my son take this video, but it won’t let me attach.? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is the same motor you have. As you twist the throttle, it also moves the timing plate. In photo 1, throttle is in “START” position. You can see the black plastic arm riding on the tan coloured portion of the timing plate.
In photo 2 the throttle has been turned past START, you can see the arm has dropped off the end of the tan portion…the pull cord is now locked up.
If that is not the issue, you need to remove & clean/check the actual starter. There are some plastic bushings, maybe one is broken, missing etc.
do some searching on YouTube- don’t just undo the starter & then wonder how all the parts go together, after they’ve flown across your shop
