Pull rope pulls back when trying to start

I have a 1979 mercury 20 hp manual start tiller. When I pull the rope, it fires and tries to start, but pulls the rope back as if it was trying to crank in opposite direction. Hurt like @@@@! Its never done that before. I just replaced the switchbox and that's where im at. What could cause it to do that someone please??? I tried multiple times with both arms but does it everytime it tries to start.

Have you had it running since you changed the switch box? If not my first thoughts are that you have the wiring crossed on the coils. That would have it out of time causing your trouble. I can check a wiring diagram tomorrow if you need me to
Good Luck, I'll check back. HTB Boats

I have a 1997 Mercury 25 hp manual start that does this. Was told it was a coil issue by another member on this board. I know my ignition doesnt have any wires crossed per say be cause its factory stock still. So i am going to look into geting coils when I get off of work later this week.

the wiring is wrong and its trying to run backwards is my guess..why did you replace the switchbox?...if you find the problem to be switched wires and then have problems you may have sheered the key to the flywheel also...

I had a Merc 200 (different motor but same coils) that did this. The fix was replacing both ignition coils. Never understood WHY, but that was the fix.

I replaced the switchbox because the old one was all swollen up so I assumed it wasn't firing because I sprayed a good mix of gas and oil directly into the carb and it never even tried to start. I did this many times before I concluded it wasn't a fuel issue. It even appeared I had flooded it with choke before hand. The box was replaced last year by a marine mechanic and it was good to go. I installed one with exact number as old one and everything matched perfectly with number of wires and color pattern. I will double check my wiring in a few days or so and get back with yall. I need this downtime for my back to heal from pulling on this old piece of crap motor. LOL thanks all
