................... one of my props came off the shaft of the 280 outdrive.
I was thinking that I might just use a couple of lock nuts and oversized washers.
Do any of you know what size I can use for the shaft? I'm tired of shelling out 50$ for a cone kit.
When the spinner (aka cone nut) is installed correctly, this does not happen.
Used the long bolt thru the end of the cone. Mechanic said I need to use loctite next time. Boat is a houseboat and drives don't tilt all the way out of the water so not sure loctite will be able to cure.
There is no need for Loctite, IMO.
Again, when installed correctly, this does not happen.
OK....
The first gen 280 may not have been internally threaded for the keeper bolt... sounds like yours is threaded.
Note that the net length of the prop shaft is same between the 250/270/275 and 280/285/290 prop shafts....... but the spacer/line cutter is specific between 270/275 and 280/285/290.
Only the spinner changes between short/long hub props.
Are you using a Long or Short hub prop?
The long hub prop cannot be used with the SS indexing tab washer (no exposed prop shaft splines).....
Therefor we must use the AFT portion of the 2 pc spinner ONLY..... and the keeper bolt.
Most of these are set up for the locking bolt.... and will not work otherwise.
Therefor a Long hub prop is difficult to make work on a prop shaft that is not internally threaded.
If using a short hub props, either the 1 pc or both halves of the 2 pc spinner can be used.
The SS indexing tab washer will also be used, but the spinner must be castellated for the locking tabs.
For an internally threaded prop shaft, the locking bolt can be used in lieu of the SS tab washer.... or you can use both.
Lock the Spinner down tightly..... and gently fold several tabs into the castellated areas.
Or.......
Lock the Spinner down tightly..... and gently tighten the locking bolt.
This is usually all that is required.
Do you by chance had a bent prop shaft? (vibration?)
