Props keep falling off VP280 outdrive

Was so stoked to get my engines squared away (see previous posts about cronic flooding issues and hard starts)... Took the boat out this weekend and for the 2nd time in 2 years, one of my props came off the shaft of the 280 outdrive. Luckily the guy I bought the boat from had a spare, but I need to order the cone kit again. I was thinking that I might just use a couple of lock nuts and oversized washers. Do any of you know what size I can use for the shaft? I'm tired of shelling out 50$ for a cone kit.

As always, thanks for the help.

Used the long bolt thru the end of the cone. Mechanic said I need to use loctite next time. Boat is a houseboat and drives don't tilt all the way out of the water so not sure loctite will be able to cure.

Can you use the lock tab washer setup instead of, or in addition to, the bolt? My 270 has to use the lock tab washer and I've not lost a prop in 39 years.

I am not sure. The mechanic I spoke with today said there are two different models. One that uses the lock washer and one that does not. Do you know how I can tell?

When the spinner (aka cone nut) is installed correctly, this does not happen.

There is no need for Loctite, IMO.
Again, when installed correctly, this does not happen.

OK....
The first gen 280 may not have been internally threaded for the keeper bolt... sounds like yours is threaded.

Note that the net length of the prop shaft is same between the 250/270/275 and 280/285/290 prop shafts....... but the spacer/line cutter is specific between 270/275 and 280/285/290.

Only the spinner changes between short/long hub props.

Are you using a Long or Short hub prop?

The long hub prop cannot be used with the SS indexing tab washer (no exposed prop shaft splines).....
Therefor we must use the AFT portion of the 2 pc spinner ONLY..... and the keeper bolt.
Most of these are set up for the locking bolt.... and will not work otherwise.
Therefor a Long hub prop is difficult to make work on a prop shaft that is not internally threaded.

If using a short hub props, either the 1 pc or both halves of the 2 pc spinner can be used.
The SS indexing tab washer will also be used, but the spinner must be castellated for the locking tabs.
For an internally threaded prop shaft, the locking bolt can be used in lieu of the SS tab washer.... or you can use both.

Lock the Spinner down tightly..... and gently fold several tabs into the castellated areas.
Or.......
Lock the Spinner down tightly..... and gently tighten the locking bolt.

This is usually all that is required.

Do you by chance had a bent prop shaft? (vibration?)

.

Rick,

Thanks for the detailed information. I put the prop on this weekend and I think the thing that was missed in the past was the need to fold the tabs. Once I did that, I can see how it shouldn't come off. The advice is greatly appreciated and details about how to put it on are greatly lackinig on the web!

Ok, so I am having the same issue....twice in 1 week. I have a long hub prop, shaft is threaded. The fish line cutter would not fit with the prop so my mechanic told me to forget it. I slud the prop on, threaded the spinner, used a long bar and tightened it as much as I could, then put on the locking screw as tight it would go. Today I got to a cove, hit neutral, then hit reverse and nothing. I popped into the water and the whole kit and caboodle is gone...again!

Any ideas ? I have an 82 penta 200d motor and outdrive. Counter rotation, 16 x 13 prop.

Crap..ok. The line cutter race did not fit over the smooth part of the shaft at the bottom, it only went over the splines....now my mechanic ( who has been stellar all times past) said I probably have a 280. I wonder if there is a larger diameter line cutter?
