I have a 79 150hp with type III ignition. I am wondering if the type of spark plug wire I should use is the "metal wire" or the "suppression" type wire since it is electronic ignition. I have 440 cable and would like to use it but wonder if there is any reason why I should not.

"Chris, most outboard wires are the "metal" type core although some (newer/more high tech) wires out there are now carbon core.

What you are ultimately looking for is wires that provide a minimum of resistance (less than 250 ohms per foot).

The 440 cable is considered "hot", or super low resistance to transmit your voltage unobstructed to the plug. However, there is a Marine 440 wire (produced by Mallory among others) that has a tin plating on the copper core to make it suitable for the marine environment.

Marine wire is a little different, that's why it's fairly rare that you ever have to replace it unless the rubber rots, gets burned etc - they just don't wear out the way automotive plug wires do...."

"Chris, Those wires are available at VintageMercs.com, Sierra among other places. They should be stranded stainless steel core wires, with zero resistance."
