Proper Muffler Usage and Type

I have reverse mounted engines

I have reverse mounted engines and v-drives so my distance to the transom mounted flappers is about 36" or so from the elbows on the manifolds. The 4 - 12" mufflers also require a down angle to reduce water intrusion. Currently is is about 12" below the elbow so the drop is moderately steep.

My engines are very throaty and loud when underway at cruise rpm say..3200. There is NO normal conversation without shouting. Is there a muffer system I could use that would accomplish the goal to keep water out and give us a chance to reduce the sound level? The 7kw genny is nearly silent but of course is not 2-454's

"Ayuh,....

If you have the space, you could go to water-lift mufflers,.....
They're just like the 1 on your Genny,....
Only Bigger....."

"SO they mount vertically? Where do I begin to look for this and is there a name for them? Do they allow the same performance in the engines? While I prefer to quiet them down, I can live with the noise IF...IF it impacts performance.
I like performance."

"Ayuh,.....

I don't want to be posting links to a competitor's site,....
But,....
I just googled "Water-Lift Mufflers",+ got over 2000 hits,.....
The 5th 1 down has what you're looking for.....

And,......
I didn't search, but Andrew probably has some listings right here at this site...."

"Hi Rick,

GREAT find...Thank you. I am on it AND (best yet, it is only about 35 miles from the house)I have 1 question. This means I need to get an 8" exhaust hole out the transom for each muffler? Where would I find 2 of those monster size exhaust flappers and do they (mufflers) require mounting below, at, or above water line. Seems like 2 - 8" holes would sink the darn boat !"

"Al, That's a misprint, i

"Al, That's a misprint, it is a 5" discharge, not 8". Mufflers and discharge both mount above the waterline. Discharge is open, no flappers. These are what Silverton has used for years. If you have the clearance, this is the way to go."

"Thanks Rick, Sorry to pummel

"Thanks Rick, Sorry to pummel you with questions BUT, Can I mount these mufflers from the 4" elbow, then use a 5" wet hose from the top curved and going down hill to just above the water line, then using the tangent at the BOTTOM portion of my existing exhaust holes and enlarge the rest of it to 5" and support the muffler with a clamping bracket to the "tiller" support 2x6? This 2x6 has the rudder posts thru it but has a reasonable amount of free space to use on it OR should I patch the old exhaust outlets and use side discharge above the waterline there?"
