Proper Impeller installation on AQ131

I had overheating problems at

I had overheating problems at the end of last season and it turns out that the impeller was all chewed up. I bought a new one but when I placed it in the engine and started it up the engine still overheated. Is it possible that I didn't have the impeller's blades in the right direction? What is the proper way to place(install) an impeller? Thanks for any help.

"It is darn difficult to install that impeller the wrong way, and unless you missed the Woodruff key the problem should be elsewhere.

I would check first the raw water hose connector in the outdrive. Those things fail a lot due to corrosion and if they become perforated the pup will suck air when the boat is on the plane. The hose connector is inexpensive and easy to replace. Do a search in the Volvo Penta forum for the words <font color=""ff0000"">hose connector</font>, as this has been discussed countless times."

"El, I've heard the term 'woodruff key' used before when talking about impellers but I'm not sure how that may apply to the impeller for my AQ130C engine. The pump I have looks like this one:

And the impeller I use is in that pump is a Volvo 875808 (Sierra 18-3080). This impeller has a shaft which runs through the round hole in the middle of the impeller and then I install the impeller by pushing the impeller onto the shaft in the pump (part 7 in the above link) with the shaft inside the impeller going inside a groove in the pump shaft and pushing the impeller all the way on to the pump shaft so that the face of the impeller is flush with the outer edge of the pump. Kind of hard to explain in words. I have not had any overheating or circulation issues. Am I missing something here or maybe this pump/impeller combo does not use a woodruff key?"

and there are several ways of attaching an impeller to a shaft depending on the pump type; i.e. splines, keys, a screw on the impeller, etc. The raw water pump for the AQ130 is different from the ones used in the OHC engines. The one for the AQ131D (Michael's engine) is the one on the link, and that particular model has a Woodruff key (part 6).

"It prevents the impeller from turning around the shaft. There is a half-moon keyway cut in the shaft where the Woodruff key goes; and there is a slot cut in the impeller. So, to install the impeller, you align its slot with the Woodruff key on the shaft, then slide it in, and off you go."
