Hello my name is Joe and live in North Carolina. I have. 1961 Evinrude 40hp LarkIII (model 35524).
I am attempting to replace the prop shaft oil retainer seal. The original (one piece) seal was enclosed on both sides and approximately 3/8" thick. When ordering a replacement it shows only one required, but it is a normal appearing type (closed on one side and open on the other) approximately 1/4" thick and are usually directional. I was told my a mechanic to stack 2 of them, but this is too thick and will not allow the oil retainer housing to index into the lower unit housing pin (outboard of the bearings). If one replacement seal will work, what direction should it be installed. Thank you
