Prop help 2001 40 hp

Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me wether an omc prop 0391014 will fit a 2001 40hp mariner not bigfoot? any advice would be great.

Short answer is NO.

The backspace on the prop hub is shorter on an OMC than a Merc prop, so an OMC prop on a Merc would leave a slight gap between the extreme back of the hub and the gearcase (the extreme rear of the prop hub should actually recess a hair into the gearcase). This will allow excess exhaust to escape around the the prop, instead of the "through" the middle as designed and can lead to major ventillation problems (loss of traction) particularly at the lower end of the rpm band.

Modular props can be shared amongst different mfgs. The props are identical but it's the hub assembly that changes to accomodate the particular motor. On some other props there are different extension rings that added to the rear of the hub to get the backspace correct (but normally just on props bigger than you would run on a 40 horse).

However, any prop that has the standard "pressed in" hub is only designed for motors that share the same gearcase style and the same number of splines (teeth) on the propshaft. So no to an OMC prop for your particular model.

One more note, 391014 is a 21 pitch prop. So it's very unlikely that your motor could even turn a 21 pitch without bogging so severely that it would stall the motor. Most 40 horse motors, correctly matched with their boat will generally turn 13 or 15 pitch props. So it's unlikely this prop would even be useful to you even if you went the expense of getting it re-hubbed to fit your application.

HI, Thank you very much for taking the time to answer that for me it all makes sense. As for the prop size I thought it was a bit big but if I could get it cheap enough it would be worth a try, The engine is a fairley big cc 40hp (960cc from memory) so its got a bit of torque and its on a very small and light hull (13ft,95kgs) . It has a 11 1/2 x 15 on it at the moment and gets to 5500 rpm no worries. Thanks again, Joe

If you are getting 5500 rpms with a 15 pitch then you could run a 16 pitch, maybe a 17 if you sometimes run "light", but moving up to a 21 would drop you down into the 4300-4500 rpms range, considerably below the 5000 minimum that this motor should be turning.

I would be tempted to replace with a 4 blade 15 pitch of similiar diameter and call it "good".
