"have a 85 hp johnson that the engine races to high rpm when past 1/4 throttle. I put a board between prop and the foot, marked the prop using the cotter pin as a guide. I turned the fly wheel and the the marks stayed in alignment but the flywheel turned. I verified the flywheel is not slipping by pulling a plug out and verifying the piston is moving when I turn the fly wheel. The shaft which runs through the prop has not moved either. What is going on? please help"

"Normally when the drive is OK at low speed but fails as the power is increased it is due to failure of the rubber hub of the prop but if I understand you correctly you are saying that when you turn the engine by hand the prop shaft does not turn. (You put it in gear presumably)

It is therefore failing to engage gear (same problem in forward and reverse?) due to a problem with the gear selector mechanism somewhere or due to a mechanical failure of something in the gearbox or even a broken drive shaft (possible but the least likely perhaps).

You dont give any model details, year, model number type of gear shift etc, so cannot speculate further.
I fear it will need a fair amount of dismantling to discover the problem.

BTW if the flywheel slipped on the crankshaft the engine would not run at all because the ignition is powered by the magnets in the flywheel
