"Hey everyone,
I have been working on my project boat for several weekends. I only get a few hours a day so I havn't made the progress that I would like.
Progress so far - I took a 6 gallon tank and hooked it to each motor to rule out bad fuel. I found that 1 motor runs like a top. The other motor would idle but not take throttle. I took the carb off and rebuilt it and found that the people that previously rebuilt it left the spring out that was under the main pump for the primary metering rods. I pulled the spring out of one that I found in the junkyard and put it in my carb. I put it back on the motor and runs much better. I still have to adjust the carb because it doesn't idle as well now. Here are the new problems that I have found. The tach for this motor shows that I'm idling at 1600 rpm when the motor is running slower than its partner who is idling at 900 rpm. The oil pressure, and temp gauges do not work for this motor as well. Does someone have a wiring diagram that I could get a copy of? What should I look at as being the culprit? The previous owner had just replaced the gauge pod for the upper station and it is not hooked up so I will probably need a little guidance on this as well.

thanks"

"Chuck:

that spring in the carb that was missing is the power piston spring which should be under the power piston. leaving it out will NOT keep the engine from starting and idling though it will inhibit the power system when the throttle is opened. You should check that the spring you put in there has acceptable operating points.

On the gauges, since you have more than one issue, I'd suspect a common power supply issue; either side. You should have a basic diagram for an instrument panel in your owners manual. If you have 'dual station' gauge installation, you need to have senders that match. On the tach, look on the back for a selector switch (4,6,8,12P). should be 8 - some times they get crusty so rotate the selector knowb a few times"

I'm with you on everything but the part about the senders that match. Can you explain?
By the way I have no owners manual. This boat was basically a hull with mechanical equipment. So I don't have any manuals or documents to work off of. I have downloaded everything so far off of the internet.

thanks

"Senders matching...unless con

"Senders matching...unless configured otherwise, the engines usually come with single station senders. If a second set of gauges has been added, the senders should have been swapped out. your original post didn't indicate if the installed had been working at some point in the past.

Do you need a generic instument cluster schematic?"

"The boat already had a gauge pod and controls up top. He just replaced the gauge pod, so I would assume that I have matching senders. Yes, I would like to have a generice instrument cluster schematic. thanks for your help."

"Chuck,

The impedance of the sender is differeant between single station helms and duals in order to provide some level of accuracy in the reading. SO, once calibrated for a single helm, adding another instrument without changing the sender will cause the instrument to display incorrectly."

"you don't calibrate them,

"you don't calibrate them, you buy the correct ones. The dual station senders have half the resistance of the single station units. That way they will sink twice the current of a single station sender and both gauges will see a 'normal' reading.

Found a schematic....now have to extract, convert, and post."

"Here's one, in PDF, from my merc documentation.

Expected differences:
RED/PUR may be PUR (ignition)
TAN/BLU may be BLU {seen GRN & BLK used, too} -warning horn
YEL/RED may go thru gear control box - for neutral safety function (starter)
