Well just bought an old yellow 1977 mercruiser with a cracked block, it had in it a 165 merc straight six. Well my dad has merc 160 that we took out of his old Mark Twain. So we swapped engines and everything lined up perfectly except the wiring plug in. It had one prong differnet than what was in the existing boat. So I was wanting to know if there is some kind of an adapter so that the 160 will fit the 165 wiring, it is soooo close, but yet so far away please help any help will be appreciated! Thanks

Re: Project Old Yellar!

You ain't never gonna find no adapter.. Sooo you got a couple of choices.

1- break off the extra prong plug it in and run it and see what that prong was for.

2- Run down the wire find out where it goes. This is the option i would choose.

3- create your own harness, i did that in the boat i have now. I cut one by one out the wires and have no main plug now. Took a day but now i have no gremlins and am 100 % sure i have a safe boat.

Think, think, think, what is on the new boat that is not on the old boat.

Then you might be able to double up a wire. But don't do it unless you know for sure whats the extra wire for.

Your dad must be proud of you, cause you asked first before doing something stupid.

I know i would be if i were your pops.

Re: Project Old Yellar!

Well we did break off one of the prongs and had to run two new wires and the boat runs great. But we had to put in a push button to start it there really is no problems except the lights and bilge pump won't turn on, but we are in the process of running new wires for that. Thanks for the info it was a shot in the dark to see if there was an adapter. I think by the time we are done we will have our own wiring harness made like you said you did. Thank again for the info. Tonight we are putting a new water pump in the outdrive and hopefully testing out at the lake.
