Procedural Breakthrough in L/U Re-Assembley

Those pesky clutch dogs that have a spring and two ball bearings running through the prop shaft can be a bit tricky on the re-assemble.

Well they are for me.

OMC has a special tool, well a bunch actually, depending on the motor size. I have resorted in the past to making my own. A piece of thin wall aluminum pipe with a slit cut lengthwise through it. Then shape one end to fit around the clutch dog ears etc., etc., etc.

I know mechanics who have a drawer full of these homemade problem solvers.

Now here is the breakthrough: .........Zip Ties. Yup, zip ties.

Zip tie those suckers. Wrap the tie around the ball bearing/spring, holding them in the prop shaft. Insert prop shaft into clutch dog. You can actually see that the bearings are lining up where you want them. Push and........ done. Zip tie slides off as bearings insert. pry out/cut zip tie. Absolutely brilliant.

Anyone have the phone number for NASA?
