Problems with Mercruiser 350

"I changed my carborator, fres

"I changed my carborator, fresh water pump, and valve covers. After that, I started my engine to set the carborator. I checked my timing. I set it back to 8 degrees. BTDC. The motor was running fine. I shut it down for about four hours; then when I went back to start it, it didn't want to start, like it didn't have any fire. So, I loosened my distributor bolt, turned the distributor to advance timing, and the engine fired up. After it warmed up, I set it back to 8 degrees. And it ran perfectly. Then, when I stopped it and tried to start it again later, it did the same thing...no start. Someone told me that it was the harmonic balancer. I could be off. Throwing off the 8 degrees. Should I leave it advanced, or what could be the problem? Could anyone help me? Thanks."

"I'll bet the advance mech

"I'll bet the advance mechanism is sticking on you, and not coming back. When you set the timing the advance was all the way out and stuck in that position. Eventually the springs pulled the advance back, so it was now big time retarded.

You'll need to take the distributor apart and free up the advance mechanism.

Jeff"
