Problems shifting

Hi everyone,
I just bought a boat a few weeks ago, got it on the water And the first afternoon on the water was fine no issues. My problem started the next day, I was on river headed back to load up...while in forward gear and engine revved up n stopped going forward. Since then it hasn't gone into either gear and w engine off the propeller spins freely in neutral but if I put it in forward gear it turns but with some tension and if I try to turn other way it locks n does not turn at all, same thing when in reverse gear. It's a 3.0 mercruiser w an alpha drive second gen. I'm not sure if this has been brought up before and what I have read, a lot of the suggestions point to shift cable worn out or out of adjustment

once again thanks for any help

when in fwd gear the prop will lock CCW and ratchet CW. In reverse it will lock CW and ratchet CCW
In fwd, try standing on a prop blade and try to turn it CCW. Look inside the boat at the inputshaft.
prop turns ,shaft dosent= drive damage
prop turns, shaft turns= coupler damage

You might simply have a blown prop hub. Pull the prop and take a look; if the rubber is buggered up, that's it.
