Problems re-installing lower unit 85 115 straight 6

This is driving me nuts. Cant get engine in neutral after replacing impeller. I did see a previous post with this same problem. One mistake I think I made was dropping the lower unit while in neutral, and I guess it should have been in forward. So I've dropped it 2X more, and re-installed, trying to do this in forward.
Now when I put the lower unit in gear, while not attached, I'm turning it all the way clockwise, right? and as far as the trottle, i'm just putting it in gear, not pushed all the way forward. Is there something obviouse that I'm missing? This is driving me nuts.

Then put the lower unit in nuetral and the control in nuetral and assemble carefully.--------------------This caper happens all the time.---------Need an assistant to carefully turn the flywheel and GENTLY move the control to engage the splines.

OK, tried again, no luck. Cant seem to get lower unit into neutral while its off. I believe i have the "e-z shift" cam, if i rotate the shift spline, it doesnt go all the way around, goes about 30 degrees in either direction. no matter what spot its in, it ratchets in one direction, and in the other direction, turns the cam like its engaged. My thinking is that with the shift shaft halfway between the two maximum rotations should be neutral, right? What am I missing here. This is driving me crazy, changing an impeller is supposed to be routine.

This should be " easy "---------------the clutch dog has a strong spring and it takes some effort to turn the shift shaft.----------Finding nuetral should be easy but it may jump back into forward gear.--------------So find forward on the lower unit and put control in forward.-----------------------------Forward / forward -----nuetral / nuetral or renverse / reverse and you can install this lower unit.

It seems all I have is forward in the lower unit. Cant find neutral turning the shift shaft. Could I have damaged it or misaligned it while removing the impeller? It was a little stubborn and ended up having to cut if off.

Look up at the upper end of the shift shaft and see how it rotates to get forward / nuetral / reverse.----------------Then duplicate this with the shift rod on the lower part.----------------------You need a vice grip on it to find nuetral !!!!!

Ok, since I'm driving myself crazy..... when turning the shift shaft with the lower unit off, it should still change gears, right? So, if Im turning the shift shaft and it stays in forward, something must be wrong. Any guesses what it might be? It rotates very easily with vice grips, not all the way around, but definelty more than the 30 degrees described in the manual. And it definitly didnt have this problem when I took it off... AAARGH, hate fixing my own mistakes, hate asking for help, hate the thought of giving in and bringing the lower unit to a "professional"

Of course it shifts with the lower unit on a bench.-----------------Clockwise to go to forward and counterclockwise to go to reverse.------------STRONG SPRING IN THERE.----------------Lightly grip the driveshaft and have an assistant turn it while attempting to shift.-------------When you figure it out you will say -------" that was easy "

OK Got it. I was being too gentle, and it needed the prop to turn to allow it to shift, not the driveshaft. Had to get help from someone who knew more than me. (arrgh) Also, seems it needed to be in neutral. When I installed it in forward, still couldnt get neutral or reverse, but in neutral, I have all three. Woohoo
