"1979 100 hp evinrude doesnt want to plane out and bogs at full throttle. new plugs, new coils, clean carb, good gas, new fuel pump, have fire on all 4 plugs. It idles great, but has horrible fuel consumption. It just doesnt have any power. Could I possibly have any of the carb or throttle adjustments out of wack? ANY IDEAS"

"Post the results of a compression test. It is the absolute first step in trouble shooting, especially on these " pressure back ring " motors."

"I have tinkered with the timi

"I have tinkered with the timing on the water. I dont have a timing light. I can adjust it back and forth and get it on plane slowly. When I stop it doesnt want to plane back out. What all is involved with checking the compression? The boat ran fine last year at about 46 mph at about 5000 rpms. Now even when it does plane out it only reaches about 30 mph at about 3500 rpms. After all the work it idles better and runs better on the low end, but there is just no top end power. When I get it on plane and try to trim up for speed it just starts to porpuse because of the lack of power."

The timing on these motors is

The timing on these motors is fixed and should not be adjusted. The factory setting does not change. It could be a sheared flywheel key is the culprit.

"in a perfect world,..the timi

"in a perfect world,..the timing theoretically, would not need to be checked...however,anytime a power pack is changed,a flywheel, crankshaft, timing pointer adjustment,etc,..has been messed with, the timing should be checked/adjusted.Checking the ign high speed timing, during a tune up,is straight outa the book,on every eng, except 9.9's and 15's.a loose timing stop screw, and then someone screws it way in,would result in a severe loss of HS timing,..hence the timing ck's during a tune up,..its just as critical to know where it is,as the compression.......but,..just my opinion,OMC"S and BRP's."
