" I've got a problem with my '89 Evinrude 225. After running at cruising speed (4000 rpm) for 3-4 minutes, it suddenly starts running rough and rpm's drop to about 2750. It seems to run fine from 800 - 2500 rpm, but won't turn up more than 2750. Not sure where to start. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. "

"Tom77.... Your engine has designed into it what is called the S.L.O.W. feature. Simply said, this feature eliminates a portion of the ignition, and drops the rpm to 2500 should the engine start to overheat. Bottom line is that (apparently) your engine is overheating for some reason.

" Joe - thanks for the response. My initial thought is to replace/rebuild the water pump in the lower unit. But before I do that, is there anything else I should check first? I don't know if this is related, but there looks to be a temperature sending unit(?) on the top of the port bank of cylinders. When I removed the engine cover, I found the wire to this broken, and the tip is pretty rusty. I'll repair the wire, but should I replace the sending unit or just clean it up? Again, I appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks. "

"Tom.... There's a heat sensor on top of both cylinder heads. If the wire is broken right at the sensor unit, replace it. However, if the wire is broken, rusted, whatever, away from the unit which doesn't affect the unit itself, simply repair the wire.
