"Hey guys,
I have a problem and I am looking for some expert help. I have a 90 hp Johnson VRO. I purchased the boat this year, and it ahs worked great up until last weekend. i went to pull the kids on the tube, and the boat would not "get out of the water". this boat will normally do 42 mph, but it could barely do 16 mph. Interestingly, it would go (Somewhat) with the choke, but would never really get out of the hole like it should. I am mechanical, and believe it is either spark, or fuel (Most likely). The guy before me had the VRO pump replaced. No alarms are going off, but the motor seems hot. Lots of water is comling out of the "tell" so i believe the water pump is working. I replaced the primer bulb- the problem still persists. Could the VRO pump be F---ed up, spark, where would you start. the primer bulb is not collapsing (That i have observed) and looks/feels fine. After a 15 min stretch today of stop-start- pull the hood off, etc, the boat started working ok. Also, in the morning, when it is cool, it seems to work ok. When it ahs sat in the marina in the sun and has 27-32 degree celcius heat, the boat acts up. Where should I start? Should i disconnect the VRO (How would you do this)- just unhook the wires???- and hook a premixed tank up to the motor directly? It does have a built in tank. I am desperate and do not want to miss great fishing!!! Please help????"

Compression test and check for

Compression test and check for spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" or better at each cylinder.Check all electrical connecters ( plug ins ) and grounds on the coils.

I would get rid of the vro as

I would get rid of the vro as soon as you can.. it has burned up more outboards than I can say ..Take it to a shop to have it done just my 2 cents worth

"i have an 87 90 that is identical to yours .
follow Ikias advice , most likely its a power pack getting ready to go
as far as vro cut the feed line plug it off and cut the gery wire. and that is the end of that questionable device.
i did the same thing to mine. but the guy i got it from sunk it and did not drain the water from the oil resivor. then ran it scoring all 4 cyl.
runs great on pre mix and about a 1000.in parts
plus my own time."

i see one mention "pull the hood off" in your original statement....does the motor run ok with the cowl off?have you left the cowl off and run it for extended run?if it performs ok with cowl off i would suspect a exhaust leak.....that would change the oxy level in your fuel/air mix...if this is not the problem i would start with the 2 basics...check the compression....check the spark for 7/16 inch jump as Ikia recommended...your first decision is is it electrical(fire) or is it fuel...why do you suspect the motor is running hot?

"VRO failures are far less common you would be led to believe. Don't disconnect it unless you have reason to believe the oil section is bad!

As for your issues. Try squeezing the bulb while underway. If you get a substantial improvement, there may be issues with the fuel side of the VRO.
The typical symptom of fuel supply/pump issues would be starving out after a minute or two of high speed operation.

My bet would be on dirty carbs, or loss of spark to one or more cylinders"
