"Hi. I am having problems star

"Hi. I am having problems starting my boat (1997 Chaparral 4.3 LXH GEN+). Last night I went to start my boat and heard click..click when turning ignition key. Today when I tried I just heard some high pitch rotating noise from The starter...no more click..click. Any Ideas would be much appreciated!!

"First check the battery, then

"First check the battery, then start checking all of the connections (tight and Clean), then check that you have 12v going to the starter, if still click click then more then likely the starter is gone.."

Sounds like your starter solen

Sounds like your starter solenoid is shot. You likely need a new or rebuilt starter/solenoid. If you take it to Auto Zone or NAPA they can test it for you.

Thanks Bill. Thanks Rod. Went

Thanks Bill. Thanks Rod. Went and picked up my trailer so I can get to the starter a little easier. Quarters are cramped in the bilge.

the sounds you are hearing can

the sounds you are hearing can be the result of not enough amperage to the starter. Battery? Cables? Connections?

I've checked all connectio

I've checked all connections and changed the battery but still had the same noise. Hmmmm. I didnt work my way back to the dash to check under it and make sure everything is tight there. I'll do that before spending the $200.

Thanks

Unlikely a problem

"Richard;
Unlikely a problem up front.

The high starter current is switched by the starter solenoid, the front wiring handles only an amp or two that closes the slave solenoid, which then closes the starter solenoid.
So if you are hearing a click, and starter noises, the solenoids are closing, which means the up front wiring is doing its job.

Sorry, but I think you will have to make like a monkey and get into your best contorted position upside down on your back and pull the starter. Then you will discover you have the wrong socket! It's the law of boating.

Take heart though; usually when I have had to assume the position, the whole engine is hot and you are continually burning yourself on the manifolds etc. You ought not to have this problem!

i would try jumping the starte

i would try jumping the starter at the solinoid on the starter by crossing power from the main lug to the tiny signal terminal and see if it starts. (get a starter button with aligator clips)

Then it sounds like its time to pull the starter for bench testing. See Rod's first note.

cheers

I'll try to jump here with

I'll try to jump here with the clips and starter button. Can you get these at any old Marine Store? Thanks again for everyones input.

"Just got boat back and it was

"Just got boat back and it was the starter. The mechanic had to pull the engine due to hydrolock (water coming in the engine again) and a bolt that was broken. Didnt mention this before but i had the engine rebuilt from the block up. Reason for rebuild was because the manifold was supposedly leaking water into the engine and had mixture of oil and water. So i had a new 2 peice manifold put on, heads redone because compression was all over the place, new risers and carburater and new y pipe. The boat ran fine like I said but wouldnt start because of a bad starter. I asked the mechanic how the water was getting into the engine if he had just fixed everything. His reply was that it was not mechanical and wasnt sure how it was getting in there. He also aked if someone was vandalizing my boat. I should mention that the water was just in the pan 2 gallons and not in cylinders or coming out of heads when spark plug removed. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Talked to mercruiser and they said maybe a baffle was stuck or it might need a riser lift kit. Any ideas much appreciated

"Did the same person who rebui

"Did the same person who rebuilt it say the hydro wasn't mechanically caused? What other way is there? It ain't an electrical problem if water got in. If water got into the oil pan, it sounds like a bad gasket/installation. Is there any gasket sealant around the heads and/or intake manifold? If there is, it's the fault of the rebuilder. Gasket sealant is not used there and anything like that is usually already on the gaskets.

BTW- that riser lift kit is Mercruiser's way of minimizing the damage due to their design. Did your motor have any run-on issues?"
