Okay Guys I am not very boat savvy, so as i explain this i will try to be as descriptive and "not" stupid as i can.
I have recently acquired an 1989 bayliner capri, it has a 120 Force L-Drive.
The motor and electrical is all sound, have replaced the starter and prop. We pulled it out of the previous owners storage and started it up.
I shifts into forward just fine and the gear engages, but when in reverse the lever goes all the way back, but it doesn't engage. with the trim all the way up and engine off we put it into gear and i can see the actuating arm move back and forth. Where the cable connects to the arm it has what looks like a U-joint with a pin the pin is also connected to a rod the goes into the housing. when this is all disconnected i can manualy engage the forward and reverse. but when trying to shift its almost like there isnt enuf area to engage reverse. when put into drive the prop catches and lock because it is in gear. but when put into reverse it will spin ever so lightly, almost like the pin doest fully engage unless i use my hands to finish the job.
I hope that i havent rambled to much or caused any confusion in my discription.
basicly it doesnt full ingage into reverse without a little manual help to finish the job.
on th driver side of the stern drive, i think thats what its called, there is a fill hole and a vent hole, could it possibly be just that i need to fill it up with fluid like a hydrolic cylinder?
the bought looks brand new and is in immaculant condition. the guy sold it when he found out that these engines were no longer made and parts and mechanics were so hard to find.
