Problem reassemble nissan lower unit

installed water pump kit on Ni

installed water pump kit on Nissan 8hp 2 stroke and cannot get the lower unit back in....seems to be the shift rod not going in all the way....removed the prop and drive shaft...still can't get the lower in..help!!!!!!!!!
