Problem fixed (I think)

Hello,

Yesterday I was using my 70HP Yamaha outboard. I was in the last quarter of my trip and the engine stopped. Sounded like it was no longer getting gas. While waiting for a tow I took off the fuel/water separator filter to see if there was some water in it. I noticed how easy it was to take off.

Fast forward to today. I refilled the filter with gas, made sure it was put on tight and the engine ran fine.

My question is could the stalling have been simply the filter being not tight enough or might there be another problem?

Thank you.

If the filter was far enough off that it sucked air instead of gas it would be plausible.
Future reference- there were many years of Yamaha 70s built, your year or model (so we could decode it) would be good information

Thank you.

It is a 2011 Model F70LA.

I should add that when the stall initially happened I was making sure the engine had gas by pressing the ball pump but I could tell I was just pumping air. After I put gas back into the filter and securely tightened it, the ball pump (not sure that is the correct name this, located on the gas line), it became rigid and that is when the engine started.

I do think the looseness of the filter cause the engine to suck air, but just wanted to be sure.
