will any automotive cooling system pressure tester work to check my 454XL 1995. Rear mounted heat exchanger with V drive.

"I got the pressure tester fro

"I got the pressure tester from auto zone. Pumped the system to 7psi. It held. pumped up to 10psi, and held. The pressure cap on the fill riser opened at 6psi. New cap is needed. Where can I get one? Does it have to be a crusader or any 7psi cap will work?"

"I would stick with the Crusad

"I would stick with the Crusader part. I have seen cases where automotive caps require too much vacuum to open when cooling down. This creates a vacuum situation in the engine which, instead of sucking the coolant back from the overflow reservoir, sucks air in past the seals in the circulating pump. This put air in the system, which created problems. The Crusader cap relieves at a lower setting which allows it to operate properly. The automotive cap will get you by, but I would not use it long term."

"Listen to Rick! Most MARINE

"Listen to Rick! Most MARINE caps are 7 or 8 psi; automotive caps are 15 pounds! There's a reason for the lower pressure (not entirely sure why), but it's necessary.

"I have a Crusader part # CRU034006a, but it don't look the same on the web site. Any ideas where to get one? \

Thanks

pressure cap; my parts list shows #10080 as the part no.

related question; were overflow coolant tanks standard issue on FWC systems?

"lower (than auto) ope

"lower (than auto) operating pressure limits to maximum operating temp of the coolant before it boils. put another way, there's no need for a 15# cap in a marine environment; it could be considered too much of a good thing (it could let the coolant temp get over 250 degrees) and would have an adverse effect on the exhaust system's lifetime.

I've never seen overflow bottles on the older (late 80's) crusaders but that could have been the boat makers choice. I know they were standard issue with the merc inboards."

"I went to NAPA and got a 7psi

"I went to NAPA and got a 7psi cap that fits. Filled up the coolant 50/50 and got underway. Every thing is fine. At 3200 rpm (23.5mph) temps:

Fill riser 155
Risers 114
Manifold 180
T-stat housing 160
Helm gauge 165
Oil pressure 45psi
I will order crusader fill cap.
Thanks Mako, Dave and Jeff"

"The new cap should have a round plastic cover, not the old style metal one. Crusader drawings still show the old type, but the cap has been changed and the new one should be what you get."

"Hey Rick, I ordered two new pressure caps from eBasicpower.com using part #CRU98201. I recieved the original metal ones, not the plastic ones. Good, bad or other, I'm back on the water. I did use the NAPA one for a day, and it seemed to work fine, but I like original. Thanks"
