Pressure tank connector

I have a 1957 5.5 Evinrude Fisherman that runs great but it has started leaking where the connector snaps onto the motor. I have read a couple of threads where they said to replace the o-rings in the connector. I have the parts diagram and have found where to get all of the parts for the connector but I was told by a local marine tech that it requires a special tool to remove the retainer to be able to get the o-rings out and back in without messing up the brass parts. Is that true or can someone explain how to remove and replace the brass retainer and o-rings.

Thanks

I've got 4 50's era Evinrudes. I've replaced the o-rings in all the fuel lines very easily. Take the connector off the hose, and with the connector edges held over a set of open vise jaws, take a medium nail or very thin punch, and simply tap the brass parts out of the aluminium connector, from the hose side. Besides the o-rings, there is a spring and another piece that seals against the o-ring when the connector is off the motor. I didn't use any sealer or such when I reassemeld them, but you could use locktite or something similar if you want. There are special tools I've been told that let you change the o-rings without taking anything apart, but my mechanic hadn't heard of it. To reassemble, I lined everything up, and just used the vise to push the brass retainer back into the housing.

The special tools required are two paper clips, one used straight and the other with end bent with a slight hook end. No disassembly required. Put fitting in vise end up. With straight clip push down on center spring loaded plunger and use hooked clip under "O" ring and pull out.
Lube new "O" ring and push down on plunger and insert.

I wish I had found this forum first. I snapped a piece of the brass o-ring retaining washer off when I tried to remove the o-ring. That also needs to be replaced. How would you recommend I try to remove and replace that?

Read above...see how I removed them by punching out from the hose end. It doesn't take much, the retainers are only a press fit into the connectors. Just don't lose the springs inside.
