Pre-Alpha One - Question lower shift cable install procedure

Just a Question - was it necessary for me to remove and replace the entire shift cable assy. ?

Could l have only replaced the wire cable and the made the adjustments at the shift plate ?

my new wire cable is 1/8" longer than the old.
