Pre Alpha Motor compatability

We have, what we believe is a 1973 Pre-Alpha Mercruiser outdrive linked to a Mercruiser 6 cylinder 165. We would like to put a bigger, more powerful motor on it. Any recomendations?

I would first find out if this hull was ever available with a larger and heavier engine. Secondly, learn if this hull would meet your insurance policy criteria with a larger engine in it.

.

These boats originally came out with the 165, twin Volvo 120's or a 6 cylinder diesel. The transom is about 3 inch thick and is rated for 300 hp. The boat is a 1972 Sea Camper. Very rare boat so there isn't a lot of help available. Insurance isn't a problem.
Thanks

OK........ if this hull was available with a larger engine, if it is a planing type hull, and if your insurance company will issue a policy........... you could go with a GM V-6 or GM V-8, the transom unit components for that engine (GM V engine flywheel cover, inner transom plate, exhaust Y-pipe, etc), and the correct reduction upper drive unit.

The 165 used a tri-mount system (i.e., 2 mounting points at rear and a single mounting point up front).
A GM V engine will require structural engine stringers for side engine mounts.

Can it be done? Yes!

Ayuh,..... My 1st question is,..... Is the motor well wide enough to fit a V-motor,..??

It's a major refit, everything ya got now, Goes,.....

I suggest ya start lookin' Now, for a runnin' rotten donor boat, with the driveline yer lookin' for, for the refit,.....
It's the Only sensible way to do the job,......
