Pre-Alpha - installing new Shift Cable problems

1979 27ft Carver Monterey - Mercruiser (305) 228 engine -228 sterndrive - Pre Alpha one

Installed, as a test, the shift cable through the Transom - Problem -from the engine side l can see the brass end of the cable but l cannot physically touch it (and I have small hands)
The only thing I can think of is to try and use a wire coat hanger? (someone pushing slowly from the Bell Housing) - This would still leave ,if it worked the problem with the little black inset through the transom? - don't know whether or not to do this with the wire cable installed - My thought is to get a long piece of wood dowling and try and push it out (pushing from the Bell Housing)

The other issue is that the cable ends of the new and old cables do not match - Brass ends - New one is 2 3/4 - the old is 1 5/8 - the parts number for the new cable assembly kit was given to me by Mercury Marine (Mercruiser) - will have to recontact Mercury Marine again

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar experience or any suggestions - Thanks
 
Get a long piece of wood, about 3/4" thick and about 3 ft long. Or as long as you see fit to reach the cable.

This is not easy with two people and it more difficult with one. You really need experience doing it alone.

Once cable comes thru transom about 4-6 inches, you use wood to push cable (as you look from front of engine) between exhaust down tube and block. And if you have someone to push that would be easier.

Not sure the cable design will matter.
Whats important is the cable install depth at the bell housing ( bronze threaded part is screwed in until only 1 thread is left exposed)
Also the assembly of the remaining parts are done correctly.

The length should not be an issue as its the cable travel length thats important. All that is part of the design.
 
you should have used the newest model cable that threads in from the aft such as 18-2603
next time ask here for the correct parts and the tricks to installing it

The little black insert has me worried as I believe it is still there - if I can remove it I believe that it will make it much more easier to run the Cable Housing thru and avoid any possible kinking - The only thing I can think of is to get a length of wood doweling as try and push it out

Not going to insert the wire cable until the Cable Housing is fully installed

I am not able to find the Quicksilver Bellows adhesive for another 7 to 10 days so my plan is to use Permatex Right Stuff

pull the cable sheath out from the rear, and then drill out the insert, cable will work just fine without it
whats the number of the kit your using?
 
I was successful in pushing the cable housing thru the Transom and I am able to grasp the end of the housing
using my needle nose vice grips.
Have not cemented the Bellow -will do that once I have the housing routed up to the Shift bracket - this will be another tuff one
Using Shift Cable kit 865436A03 - only one gasket
There are two black inserts in the kit - one small and one about 3 1/2 " - this one is inserted at the Gimbal housing or Transom ??

Going to remove the Bell Housing and then install the shift cable that way - too difficult without removing the bell housing = going to change the other bellows - Thanks for your help
