Hello

Boat - 1979 27ft Carver Monterey - Mercruiser 228 - 228 Sterndrive - period 1978 -1982

I am replacing the Lower Shift Cable

When removing the Shift cable bellows - I noticed that there was no Exhaust Bellow. What is there is a big engine exhaust tube - which was not connected to the Bell Housing tube.
Is this normal - This engine is loud = would this have something to do with it
Thanks - Scotty

It is or was not easy to replace the exhaust bellows. So a easy replacement is to use the tube.
Now Merc sells a oval ended exhaust bellows vs the old round bellows which was a bitch to install.

If you want to replace it with a new one maybe the oval ended one will fit.

You have to remove the hinge/pivot pins at the 3:00 and 9:00 locations of the bell housing and be able to manipulate it to get it attached to bell housing.

Note: hose clamp tightener location must be just above the water hose.

Very tight location but it is what it is and can be done. Just did one two weeks ago.

They also make a expander tool to get it on the bellhousing. When I did mine recently I expected it to be worse. If it is loud yes this is a contributor and full bellows will be somewhat quieter.

I have that tool.
The problem is you need to remove the vertical shift shaft, the one the bell crank with the small wheel, to properly use the tool and sometimes can open a can of worms. Some parts dont come apart very easy and may require to be drilled out and then replaced. Hate that part!!

By using the newer shaped bellows it can be done without the expander tool.

Didn’t know they had a different bellows. It wasn’t too bad on my gen 2 I was doing the swivel shaft bushings and seals while doing the bellows. Worst part was the cheap expander tool I bought , cheap chinesium… At any rate glad I did the full bellow vs the tube
