pre 87 fuel pump rebuild help

I'm attempting to rebuild my fuel pump using the brp kit which included these instructions.

I'm at a loss as to where to place the small spring inside the unit, It goes in different spots depending on the mounting configuration.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Here is how it started out.

Thanks A Lot! motor is 1970 Johnson 9.5 but fuel ump is common to many pre 87 motors under 40 horse. Thanks!

there is only two ways the spring gets installed. follow leeroys directions, and when you get the fp together, blow into the fp. if you blow one way it air will come out the other end. if done correct, when you blow the other direction no air will come out of the end. hope this helps? did you use a piece of wood with four screws? i actually will use 8 screws so i can lay the fuel pump on one set of screws, allowing me to place the fp pieces on another set of screws. kind of like a book.
