power trim problems

I have a 93 75 hp Merc. last fall when I went to take it out of the water the power trim would not work. When I got it back to the cabin it worked. Then during the course of draining the bottom end it stopped again. This happened on and off all weekend. I took the top off and can here the solenoids for the up and down clicking when I hit the switches. I made sure I hooked it up to a fresh battery and it raised up very slow like it was straining. Any ideas how to fix this as I will have to do it myself because I cant bring the boat in for service with the motor down. The other problem I have had since I got the boat is the motor will not stay up if left up, it gradually comes down, I have to block it up when we stop using it. Any help is welcomed Thanks

First thing to do is clean up all the electrical connections - make sure you have good power.

So connections at the solenoid, make sure that the pins on the harness connector are not corroded etc.

Then you can rule that out.

thanks i will check thinks out in 25 days when i hope i can drive in to the cabin, i do think i will have to take off the the motor, i am old guy willing to learn because i cant afford to have someone do it for me Thanks

IF there's limit switches in that system, jump around them when it won't work. If that cures it, replace the switches (IF there are any).

I would be inclined to suspect the solenoids. I've replaced more of these than I can count on all fingers and toes! The starter solenoids are the same way. The contacts get burnt then they won't pass current. The fact they are clicking means the control circuit is working, so you can rule out the remote controls & limit switch.

To test whether the solenoids are bad or the trim motor is bad, you'll have to jumper around a solenoid and see if the trim motor runs. Use extreme caution when doing so, there will be sparks! Use a wire at least as big as the wires hooked to the large terminals on the solenoids. Or a set of automotive jumper cables. Disconnect your fuel line and have a fire extinguisher ready, just to be safe.

If the trim motor runs up and down when you jumper the respective solenoid, you've found your problem; replace the solenoids.

If the trim motor still won't run, it has issues and needs to come out for repair/replacement. The trouble with your PT&T system bleeding down is likely an O-ring or seal in the system, and if you have to pull the motor, it's a good time to rebuild the hydraulics system. Note that there are a number of different styles of PT&T hydraulics, depending upon the serial #. So be sure to have that handy.

You'll find parts diagrams for your outboard starting here:

Take a can of electrical cleaner and a tube of dielectric grease with you and a couple of solenoids, Clean all of the connectors in the motor with electrical cleaner and put dielectric grease on them when you put them together. Pull all the grounds off and sand metal to metal. As far as the motor dropping does it stay where you trim it to? Single ram or three ram?

Thanks, first I will clean all the connections that will be easier than taking things off. Would rusty connections make it work intermittent? The motor will trim up (when it works) and the come down all the way in about 1/2 hr. To be honest I cant remember if it is a single ram or not
