"When I press the switch to trim down nothing happens -- completely dead, no clicking or anything. This is true for the switch on the throttle as well as the switch on the side of the motor. The up works fine.
If I rock the switch up and then down a couple of times the down will then start working.
Any ideas?"

Exact same thing happen to me.

Exact same thing happen to me. I checked the connections to all of my tilt/trim switches & found that one of the posts at the back of the switch was alittle loose - it had a very small wiggle to it & enough to make a difference. Replaced the switch & it was a fix.
