Power Tim Stopped Working!

Just picked up a 1991 Four Winns 170 Freedom with the 3.0 for what I feal was a steal! Took it out for the first time yesterday and the boat ran awesome and all was good until we went to load the boat and the power trim just stopped working. I looked over all the wires and connections and couldn't find any issues. Looked for some kind of breaker/ relay or fuse for the unit pump with no luck. I found the bleeder valve and used that to get it to go up manually.
Cant seem to find any good detailed schematic showing the wiring for my boat.

Any idea where I could start to look for the problem?

So, I started looking into the wiring and when I got up to the trim switch at the throttle it kind of came apart. Don't think that it was the issue though, but I will need to get another switch if that's even possible? Might there be another option of a switch that will work, similar in size that you all know of?

you can always put new switch on the instrument panel...
I've been an off and on novice boater for a number of years and always thought that having it on the throttle was the way it needs to be... but to your point, I guess nothing says that it needs to be. It just makes it very convenient while steering and operating the throttle at the same time.

Ayuh,..... You could have done yer trouble shooting right at the pump,....
The 3 wire harness is red for power, blue for up, 'n green for down,....
A momentary 3 position toggle switch works just fine, I've added some, like one at the transom that I can reach when on the wagon for convivence,....

That's a great idea, I will do the same. Thank you

Make sure the wires inside the remote control aren't broken or grounding out
Make sure both the up and down relays have power and ground
Check fuses or circuit breakers whatever they used.

Will do. When you say remote control, are you referring to the throttle switch?

Yep the remote control is the throttle/shifter
The wires run inside and because it moves every time you use the boat, eventually the wires can break inside, and then you can have the problem you're having.

I will trace those wires and make sure they are good and if not I will replace. I hope to have some better weather here soon. South West Michigan is a bit chilly at night by the time I get home and its not in a garage.

I would recommend starting by inspecting the trim motor itself for any signs of damage or wear. Check for a fuse or relay near the trim pump, as some models have these hidden in hard-to-reach areas. If you can’t find a wiring schematic for your exact model, try searching online boating forums or the manufacturer’s website for service manuals.

Good advice, I will do that this weekend, as long as its not too cold!! Dang I hate the wind!!!

Just a follow up on my situation, So I was able to trace the issue to one of the old style round glass fuse holders that was making intermittent connection. I think it would be best to just upgrade it with something more modern and reliable. Does anyone on here have any suggestions for me? This is what I have now, there are two of them that I would like to replace at the same time, one works still and the other does not.

Blue Seas makes watertight and ignition protected circuit breakers...they aren't 'cheap' but worth the money....

I have those too.
I would remove all the oxidation on the contacts, install new fuses and coat the rubber fuse holder where it fits together with dielectric grease. I did this with mine in my salt water environment and it has worked 100%. No need to change what you have.
If you have the old style fuse box under the helm with the glass fuses you can have the same problem there. On mine I am going to replace that in the spring with a Blue Seas 12 circuit fuse box because there is no way to protect the terminals from salt air except Corrosion X….

I will give this a go and see how that works before I make any changes. Thank you
