power tilt,trim problem

I have a 2000 mercury 40 hp on a tracker proteam 175 (2000) The trim won't work at the throttle, It will work at the button on the motor and at the button up at the front where you plug in the trolling motor and there is the tilt trim button next to it. Any I checked fuses under the console and all were good any ideas.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Not a very good mechanic. Would I just take off the throttle handle and look for a loose wire and or remove the switch.

Just take the cover off of the handle assy. Do you know how to use a test light? There should be a flat wire connector in the handle that joins the switch and wire harness.

that particular trim system has a known problem with the trim bypass circuit. with age and use the spring weakens and the system is unable to lift or hold trim at throttle. try trimming up a little and then see if it sinks down on throttle. if it does then your bypass circuit has gone bad. When people send their systems in with this problem I repair them. If it was my boat I would just reverse the needle so that it faces out and never activate trim bypass. Then i'd be careful not to lift the cooling intakes out of water on throttle.

Could you explain that in simpler terms. I don't know what the needle to reverse is, or how to not activate the trim bypass.. Also how do you remove the panel so that you could access the controls behind the throttle control lever.

His explanation confused me too. The cover either snaps on or is screwed on to the handle. You may have to pop off the push button used to take the throttle out of gear.

there is a common problem with that system caused by an internal spring. If you are sitting in your driveway and everything works perfect but it won't hold trim on throttle then you have the problem.

on the side of your system is a trim limit spool. It is part # 4 in the drawing.

on the left side of part #4 is a piston with a long needle on the end of it. As pressure builds from propeller this needle pushes
against the valve until it opens it. If the spring wears out then it opens too easily and the motor will not stay trimmed. In order to fix it you will need a replacement spring Mercury Part # 827672A1 If instead of fixing problem you would rather bypass it then flip the little piston thing over so that needle faces away from valve. If you happen work somewhere that has access to high strength die springs then you don't need the mercury kit and can fix it for $5 plus 40 minutes of time.

My problem not that it won't hold trim, but that the trim up/down button doesnt' do anything when it is pushed. The only way to raise or lower my motor is to use the trim button on the motor or up at the front where there is another trim control switch.

Any ideas on this.

three most likely suspects = fuse feeding that switch is bad, connection from fuse to switch is bad, switch is bad.
