"Hey people, I have a Mercriuser 220 sterndrive with a bad power steering pump. I know I can get a shorter belt and bypass the pump. My question is how hard will it be to steer the boat and will I make more problems in doing this? Any help will be very appreciated. Bob"

Replace the pump; take it off and go to NAPA and get a new or reman. pump.

I would rather do away with it if at all possible. Back to my original questions. Anybody out there know if it will work?

"Will it work, sure you have to remove the assist cylinder. Will the boat be hard to steer, yes.
Try it, you can always put it back on.

I have a 165hp engine on a 21' boat and find the steering hard at times and I'm not weak. I currently only have a single cable system with a basic Teleflex helm and should upgrade to a No-Feedback system designed with a patented roller clutch mechanism that neutralizes torque feedback at the helm while a positive gear drive of 22 to 1 (4.2 turns lock to lock) reduces steering effort dramatically. Perfect for boats up to 24' using wheels up to 16"

If you have a 12" wheel you'll have problems with steering torque. I have a 13" and when I take a steep turn and try to come out, it takes a lot of strength."

"I have a question. How did you know the pump was bad? I have had problems with my steering, but it ended up being the cable. I worked my way back to the cable, and found that was the problem.

I just wanted to know if I have a problem in the future.

Thanks,jt."
