"Hello All,
I have a 1982 Wellcraft Nova 230 and I seem to have significant play in the steering. The gimbal right and power steering actuator are all play free, it is the wheel that has about 1/8 play before I see any moving in the back of the boat. The steering is smooth, just would like to get that play out. Is there any adjustment or do I have to get a new cable? I am curious how the power steering works, what does the power steering pump do? I know it pumps fluid into the actuator, but how does the cable get involved in this? Thank you very much! Jon"

I think your problem is in the

I think your problem is in the little rack/pinion that drives the cable (behind the steering wheel). I've seen it before but have not found an adjustment except to replace the assembly. I don't think the power assist is the problem in your case

"The power steering pump power

"The power steering pump powers the assist cylinder. The signal from the mechanical cable sends fluid to the assist cylinder to assist in the steering. Other than the assist cylinder, nothing in the PS system will cause any play. Have someone hold the wheel tight while someone else moves the drive from the outside. Watch from the inside and see what is and is not moving.

P.S. Make sure the cable nut is tight at the assist cylinder the cable is secure at the helm, weather it's a rotary or rack and pinion system."
