Power steering acuator NPT? Pump lines wont start.

Went to hook up the 2 flared hydraulic lines (1/4 and 3/8) from the power steering pump to the power steering actuator and the 3/8 fitting will not thread. I have a 3/8 NPT tap and was going to straighten the threads out. Are the threads on the actuator NPT?? Thanks

ditto
NPT are only used where the threads do the sealing. The threads do not do the sealing on power steering connections - the seat angle seals and the threads are straight.

I have one of these in my tool box... there are about 12 million different fittings and threads out there it seems, and this little book and toolkit never lets me down.

Most definitely NOT Tapered Pipe Threads!

These will be a unique straight machine thread specific to these fittings, and the mechanical seal is done via compression.

Ok thanks guys. I've got lots of taps and dies metric and standard. Gonna match the fitting with a die. thought for sure it would be NPT. Thank you!

Ayuh,.... Yer gonna Destroy the actuator doin' that,...

As soon as the tap enters the hole, the end of the tap will be cuttin' up the sealing seat at the bottom of the threads....

I've never found a way to re-tap inverted flare fittings...

I agree with Bill 100%.
Best to pull the actuator, and get it onto your work bench where you'll have much more control over what you're seeing and doing.

You either have them reversed or you have the wrong power steering pump lines for the actuator thats installed in the boat. ..silly wabbit trixs are for kids ...

you have the wrong power steering pump line for that actuator. I'll bet it's the one with fitings on both ends the supply line. Measure the length?

Well got some different inverted flared fittings to Check and see what the threads were. Turns out it was 3/8 NPT. So I took a chance and very carefully ran a tap through it. Took it about 3/4 of the way and it was a bottom tap so no damage. Worked beautifully. Boat runs great and the power steering is sealed nicely. Thanks for all the help!
