Power Pack or Stator

"I was out today trying to find my problem. After I run for at cruising speed for about 10-15 minutes the engine will shut off. This time had a timing light with me and checked all 4 cylinders for spark no spark. When this shut down occurs it will usually re-start in about 10 minutes. This time it did not re-start. Luckily, I just attached a kicker to the boat so I was able to get back to the ramp. Still no start. After getting home the motor started right up. This is a 1987 Johnson 120hp 4cyl one power pack on this motor. I am thinking power pack or stator I haven't pulled the flywheel yet but did take an ohms reading of the stator which was within specs.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Al"

There is a good chance some components in the power pack are breaking down after getting heated up.

"If it were mine, and I were going to keep it, I would buy a powerpack for it. Hook it up and see if it solves your problem. If it doesn't, then you have a spare pack for an emergency. I always carried one in my toolbox."

i had a 1994 evinrude 88 that run good for a year or more when new and started a similar failure...it was a pushed back pin making tip to tip contact in the small plug from the stator to the power pack..i also carry a spare power pack that i bought when shooting that problem...only time its been on boat since is when stator went out on the water.stator failed exactly like yours is failing now..the stator that went bad was the type that is black...no visual signs of melting etc..ball park price is 250 for stator and 110 for power pack...uninstalled..i would guess stator...they almost always give you a warning failure or two before crapping completely out..

"I tried to pull the flywheel

"I tried to pull the flywheel today, broke 1 bolt from the puller had to use an easy out to remove it, this flywheel is not moving I am letting it sit overnight hopefully wd-40 will loosen it. I am using a 1/2" snapon impact gun have also tried hitting the large center bolt with a 2 lb hammer. Will get case harden 5/16-24 bolts tomorrow. Would like to remove this to inspect the stator. Are these always this hard to remove. Any suggestions. If I can not get this off I will get the powerpack and hopefully this will be the problem."

"I usually use a factory pulle

"I usually use a factory puller, tighten the he^&*(( out of it, and let it sit. I have even let them sit overnight, and come back the next morning and found that they have popped loose. It is not uncommon to need to apply heat to the center of the flywheel. I hate to do that, as I worry about seal and magnet damage."

"I pick -up the 5/16-24 case harden bolts today and was able to get the flywheel off. Did a visual check of the stator and did not notice anything unusual, Ohm wise it checks ok, I do not have the correct voltmeter (peak to peak)therefore I ordered a powerpack and hopefully I will have it by weds."
