power head remove 8hp

Need assistance in removing the power head for 1996 Johson 8hp outboard. I believe I have remove all the bolts but not sure how to separate the powerhead from the midsection.

It can be stuck fairly tight via the gasket. Pry against the block. I found prying near the front of the motor worked pretty easy. You don’t want to break the thin casting along the rear edge. Or a piece of hardwood & some love taps-

Thanks, it does look like one can break the rear casting easily. I'll try the front.

I tried tapping against the block with a piece of oak in the fron of the power head. No success. I sprayed PB blaster on the gasket hoping it will release the power head. any other ideas? Thanks.

perhaps I misspoke, love taps won’t do it, as you’ve discovered, the seal between gasket & exhaust housing is tenacious.
I separated a 9.9 a few months ago, I should have taken a photo of the setup. All my motors are at my summer house now.
As you know, there are not many paces to get decent leverage between the powerhead & pan. IIRC, I eventually used a 3/4” strip of hardwood, & pried between a portion of the pan & the transom clamp/leg area. Sort of underneath, at one corner & it came fairly easy.
Racer gave me the intel, maybe he will chime in, he’s done dozens.
PS if you want a factory service manual, PM me an email addy & I’ll send you a link. It’s for a 1994, but they should be Similiar.

I assume you have all the connections undone, here’s what the ‘94 model says.

Bingo! I used an old wood chisel in the front of the power head between the power head and the aluminum base plate and was successful in separating it. Thank you for your help.

Correct, don’t write it down. Email me at Ed dot Chris177at gee maildotcom I think you can figure out the correct syntax. I can’t remember how to do a PM on this site.
