Power head blew up

2015 90 hp 4 stroke with 200 hours on . Had out last week. Running around 1800 rpm . Threw a connecting rod through the block. Has anyone heard of this happening

Yes----I have seen some 4 strokes with odd crankcase ventilation.----One where you could look right through the block.----Rebuilt or new powerhead needed.----Or most shops would say ----" can we interest you in a new motor"

Cost of a power head installed is 2000 less than a new mercury 90 installed. If I do it myself I can save a few bucks

Was the 200 hrs full throttle in smooth calm water ?---Or in big waves and trolling ?-----Correct prop on the motor ?

Oem prop. The 90 hp was on a Lund fishing impact 1675. We had the boat 10 years. Used boat at least 4 weeks out of the season since I had it. I didn’t troll with. The pm on it was done every year. No sound of knocking or anything n abnormal. This was our fourth day fishing with it . Pull out of a spot running across the lake and bang thought we hit a something floating. The boat has seen all kinds of weather.

Yes it makes you wonder when they out source the parts out of this country. In my time I have seen old mercury, evinrude, Johnson run for ever. I have seen anything like this.

Most motors of any brand will run darn near forever. With care and reasonable use.

A few motors of every brand will fail early. No rhyme or reason as to why.

Nothing to do with outsourcing of parts.

Stuff breaks. Rockets explode on launch. Space shuttles fall from the sky.

Some folks wonder why stuff breaks when and how it does. I wonder how some of this stuff lasts as long as it does.

What frosts my pumpkin, is that this low hour 10 year old engine has little or no repair parts available for it, See it for yourself on this website! You couldn't rebuild this engine with new parts if you wanted to. The only option would be used parts and dealing with that sourcing mess. Very disturbing that we as consumers, have be conditioned to expect to pay crazy money for things and hope to get it through warranty. After that, "not worth fixing".

Most shops / dealers today do not rebuild these 4 strokes.----Takes too much skilled labor , expensive parts, tools and work space.-----Short season makes the decision to " buy new " easy in some areas.-----And most folks in the 4 stroke owners group have the coins to buy a new one.

Times have changed.I am old school. We’re we would repair our self. But that’s not possible anymore when parts are not available. Putting a power head on it is not worth it. When I can get a new outboard for a couple grand more with a full warranty

I just retired last month. I want to buy a new HD truck that I want to last me until I can't drive it anymore. My new in 2002 GMC has lasted me 24 years and still going strong, but she is getting tired and well worn. My head is spinning watching podcasts about what's good or bad with new trucks. Engine, transmissions, electronic system failures, you name it. I grew up in a GM family but the BS stuff they're doing with warranty avoidance I read about is pushing me into Ford or RAM. I now I have to spend $75K for a truck that may last 10 years before it is obsoleted and "not worth fixing"! Uggg!

All ready retired. Engineers sometimes have way of over complicating things. They want to build a better mousetrap. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.

In many areas folks are fixing up older pick-up trucks.----Used for running around town etc.-----No need for 100/hr shops.-----You can look at the parts and see if they are good or not.------Just replaced 2 wheel bearing assemblies on a Buick Enclave because the magnets for ABS and Traction Control fell out.----Obscene cost to repair this technology.

If they did not they would be out of jobs.

I don't want a new car that does not use a key for the ignition. They are getting harder and harder to find.

Too much crap on cars that we did not need for decades and decades. Antilock brake system inop? So what? I drove for decades in cars and trucks that did not have them.

LOL, I was in my drawer of misfit tools in the toolbox looking for something and came across my brake adjuster spoon, and the return spring removal tool for doing drum brakes, just adjust the star wheel until they start to drag while spinning the wheel; done. Remember when they self adjusted? Hit the gas in reverse and slam on um, for adjustment. Nobody turns drums or rotors anymore, too high of a skill set requirements I guess. Just toss the parts in the scrap heap and replace.

We drove without the antilock brakes all summer.----Agreed I do not need these fancy systems.----But the wife drives it in winter , she does need the system !

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Chip man; tear that thing down and show us pictures of what happened! Is your engine fuel injected or carbureted. No crankshaft or blocks available new for either version.

Fuel injected. I figured no block available. That why I see every power head is refurbished. Having a hard time posting a picture any one have a suggestion?

This is the damage. I am going open up my paper weight.
