"1993 40 hp Mercury 4 plugs, two carbs. Recently had no spark, replaced switchbox, no spark, replaced black stator with red stator with adapter, motor ran fine about 60 minutes, then slowed to idle. Still run at idle but when throttle up, engine dies but do not cut off.Could red stator be the problem ?"

"Not likely the stator - if you didn't throw in the adapter it would have fried the switchbox right away.

It sounds like the motor had a few unrelated issues.

The stator probably really was bad at the start. If you have the switchbox you replaced, save it, it's probably functional and didn't need to be replaced.

Sounds like you now have a fuel problem left to sort out. Could be carbs or fuel pump based on the description of your issue..."

"That brass looking thing may have been the float hinge

Might work for now, but I would definately take a closer look at that carb and make sure the float is still attached and not just sitting there (if it isn't, sooner or later she will start flooding on you)..."
