Potential damage?

Last year my ignition on my 5.7 merc cruiser was acting up. It got to be loose and I would have to return the key to on position instead just releasing it once the engine started. I haven't found the right ignition switch that is oval to fit through my dash so I haven't replaced it yet.
Today I went and attached the battery cables to to boat and walked over to get a hose and muffs. After a few minutes, the engine started cranked ng on its own for at least 15 seconds. I ran over and unhooked the cables and got it to stop. It never started but was just cranking with no water feeding the engine.
Did that just burn up my impeller or water pump? I am due for a new impeller soon but hoping I didn't screw up anything else. I did fire it up with water but didn't check what it was doing as far as water spraying out as I just wanted to make sure it did run.

Thanks in advance for the help
