Post subject: 1966 Evinrude, 18HP outboard - need minor help

I have a 1966 Evinrude, 18HP, 2 stroke engine. I recently purchased a boat that had this attached to it. Knowing that the carburetor needs rebuilt, the previous owner gave me the kit to do so.

I am not engine savvy at all, but with a little guidance (ok, a lot), I can get through it.

I have a guy at my work that said he'd rebuild the carb for me, he does this a lot on motorcycles and boat engines as well. So, guess what......Once I get it off, it's going to him to fix!!!!

here is my question....Can anyone help me on uninstalling the carb, so I can get it off and fixed? I see a couple nuts/bolts which are holding it on, but it also has a lot of other things attached to it as well that I don't know whats what.

If anyone could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it
 
Before doing anything, you should do a compression and spark check. If it doesn't have good compression and spark, it would be a waste of time to rebuild just the carb.

Take photos of the carb and remove the attaching parts as you go and everything will go back the way it came off.

There are a lot of photos and diagrams of different types of carburators on this site. It may not go as far as '66 model, but is very similar so try year '69 or '71 instead.

I'm going to ask a real dumb question here........
How the heck do you check the compression? How do you check if it has spark?

I'm sorry but I have no engine smarts at all. Always have had a shop do it for me. :(

I was searching on there yesterday for removal of a carb on the exact motor but had no luck in my search results. I will try the test route though.
 
There are plenty of outboard " self help " videos on u-tube.----------There is so much available that it may take some time to find the one for your motor.
 
I did find the testing videos on Youtube.....that is VERY easy to do!!!
I will check that this weekend.

If that checks out and all is well....i will procede to look for the carb removal video

I know I have over 40 years experience, but taking the carburetor off an 18 HP is easy.-------You could always write down each step as you take things apart to use as a guide to put it back together.
